Assignment 4

Here are my pictures for assignment 4 applying lighting techniques

Exercise 37 Contrast and shadow fill

For this exercise I have to set up a still life shot with the camera on a tripod and a light 2 - 3 feet to the side at the same level as the still life and take a range of photos

photo 1 no diffuser
This was the most contrasty with dark shadows falling from the objects and harsh uneven shadow on the clock face and the light side of the figure face

Photo2 using diffuser
This is a softer light

The next picture is with a piece of white card placed to the side opposite side of the light about 3 feet away

The clock face is more evenly lit, the figures face is lighter

With the white card moved closer to the subject
more light is bounced back to the lit side of the figure face and the clock face

With Aluminium foil dull side
Foil has lightened the whole image up, and lit up  the darker side of the figure

Foil shiny side this has lit the darker side of the face even more with no contrast

With shiny crumpled up this shows more contract to the darker side of the picture with more evenly spread lighting overall

Exercise 39 Shiny surfaces

I spent ages on this next exercise struggling with sticky tape, I used a small shiny silver round tin laid onto the floor with a light brown background, I first took pictures of this set up and then wrapped the tracing paper into a cone covering the tin and lens and retook the pictures

Exercise 38 Contrasting light

For this exercise I used a  off camera  flash  fitted with a snoot  to direct the light onto Steven's face here are the pictures

Exercise 36 The lighting angle

For this exercise I set up a Buddha figure on a small table used a tripod to set my camera up at the same level and then took a set of photos with a defused light at different angles

Here are the photos
Lit from the front
This is lit fairly evenly showing lots of detail with shadow to the back

From the side
The light hitting the side makes the figure look more demential but there is less detail with harsh light on one side and dark shadows the other

From behind and to one side
This has created edge lighting to the side of the figure and a subtler light on the figure

Directly behind
This has created a silhouette

For the next set of photos I have raised the light to point down at the subject at an angle

Angles and lit from the front
fairly even light without as much shadow

Angled and light from side
The lighting is one sided on the face with darker shadow to the unlit side

Angled and light from  behind and to one side
light is aimed more to the head and shoulder with a subtler light on the rest of the statue

Angled Directly behind
light flair to the figure face with a hazy look to the rest of the figure

The next 3 photos where taken overhead

Exercise 35 softening the light

I have to set up a still life arrangement for this exercise and take pictures of it using first a naked lamp and then again using translucent material over it to defuse the light

Photo1 using naked lamp Settings: 1/40ƒ/8ISO 10050 mm

Photo2 defusing the light Settings: 1/20ƒ/8ISO 10050 mm

Comparing the 2 photos
As you can see the second photo is darker with a softer light that is not as  as harsh as in the first photo in which you can see the shadows have a lot hard edges, I think that defusing the lamp works well in eliminating harsh light and shadow

Exercise 34 Outdoors at night

For this exercise I need to take pictures at night I used a tripod and cable release to take these.
